On 15 April 2012, a complex attack was initiated against Paratroopers assigned to 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, as well as a Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force (CJSOTF), and Afghanistan National Security Forces at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Justice. The attack was part of a synchronized series of actions across Regional Command – East, known among the Insurgents as “Wedding Day.” The Insurgent forces launched their attack in Paktya from a 3-story building adjacent to FOB Justice. While the Special Forces Soldiers, and their Afghan partners were engaged in heavy fighting with the occupants of the building, a Quick Reaction Force comprised of Paratroopers from the 3-509th Infantry (Airborne) was dispatched from FOB Gardez to reinforce the fight.
This painting commemorates the actions of the Scout Platoon (“Reaper”), the Quick Reaction Force from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne), who repealed the Insurgent attack in Gardez City, Paktya Province, Afghanistan. The Reaper Platoon arrived to to heavy volumes of enemy machine gun fire. After nearly three hours of enemy gun fire, the ground forces in conjunction with Attack Weapons Teams and Close Air Support were able to quell the Insurgent attack, and confirm the enemy was killed in action. The painting celebrates the brave actions of the men and women who represent 3d Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne) and their Afghan partners, as they applied unprecedented pressure on the Insurgent networks operating in Paktya Province Afghanistan during OEF XI-XII. Their actions represent the resolve and true American spirit of the thousands of Soldiers who have served America during the Global War on Terror – Geronimo!
