Desert Wolves
3ABCT, 1CD, deployed to the Central Command (CENTCOM) Area of Responsibility (AOR) as the Operation Spartan Shield (OSS) ABCT throughout Central and South Asia, the Greater Levant, and the Central Gulf regions in alignment with the goals set forth by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the National Military Strategy (NMS), January 2015, to “remain globally engaged to shape the security environment and to preserve our network of alliances” from 12 March 2017 to 19 November 2017. The BDE’s mutual cooperation with seven nations proved invaluable in countering state and non-state actors and Violent Extremist Organi- zations (VEOs) intent on carrying out direct attacks and information operation campaigns against Coalition Forces (CF) and allied nations in order to (IOT) further destabilize the region. The BDE conducted Theater Security Cooperation (TSC) Operations, Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) combat operational support, and built readiness to combat the threats.

3ABCT expertly trained with eight CENTCOM partner nations ranging from Subject Matter Expert (SME) exchanges to the planning and execution of multi-national combined arms exercises in Jordan, Kuwait, UAE, and Egypt. The BDE sustained and built readiness through an aggressive gated training strategy at com- pany level, rotating units out of OIR and Security Force (SECFOR) missions. The BDE continually demon- strated strength in training to deter aggressor state and non-state actors and assured partner nations through high Operational Tempo (OPTEMPO) and executing exercises through the duration of the deployment even during redeployment operations. The BDE’s presence in the region continued to demonstrate our national commitment to deterring adversaries while reassuring and bolstering our allies.

3ABCT’s dedication to excellence was demonstrated through simultaneous theater support exercises with partnered nations. These exercises included Soldiers and Officers from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Oman and Saudi Arabia, and were focused on BDE command post operations and individual and collective tasks at the squad, company (CO) and Battalion (BN) level. These exercises started long before each nations’ Soldiers deployed, with the BDE staff providing expert guidance in the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) and deployment operations to their counterparts.

Each subordinate BN (2-7 CAV, 3-8 CAV, 1-12 CAV, 6-9 CAV, 2-82 FA, 3 BEB, 215 BSB, and the 1-148 IN) played key and distinct roles that were vital to the success of Army Central Command’s (ARCENT) mission. They deployed forward in support of named operations, conducted ARCENT TSC missions, and provided SECFOR throughout the AOR. These missions were designed to prepare for decisive action land operations, build partner capacity, provide for the security and stability of the region, and were integral to the BDE’s success.

3ABCT, 1CD, deliberately and decisively executed countless missions to strengthen regional partnerships and prepare for decisive land operations. The BDE’s efforts were a crucial component of the ARCENT campaign plan and vital to the success in the CENTCOM AOR.
